Planning to be spontaneous and effective, all at once

Spontaneity, its something that every one of us strives for in our lives. The ability to go off the path and do things our own way, as our moods dictate. We all want a life free from external influences that often force us to do things we don’t want to do. In general, people who advocate for this kind of lifestyle might tell you that in order to achieve a blessed spontaneous life we’ve got to throw caution to the wind and embrace chaos and just LIVE.

I’m going to tell you something different, and it has had a big part in making me who I am today.

If you really want to be spontaneous, you have to also accept routine, scheduling, and responsibility. It sounds counter-intuitive, but if you want to live a life full of passion and surprise you’re going to need to support that lifestyle before you can engage in it. We’ve got to be proactive, instead of reactive. Only when we’re in control of our lives and our schedules and responsibilities can we make the time to be spontaneous and still have it fit into a lifestyle that contributes to, not detracts from, our goals.

I plan everything. I plan my meals for the week, and have them prepared ahead of time. My social schedule is booked for two weeks ahead of time. I plan my workouts for the week. I’m currently moving on September 30th, and I’ve been planning the move for the last three weeks.

By taking the time out to plan and schedule our lives, we can guarantee that our lives will be filled with everything we want in them. I can plan a week with the bare minimum scheduling, and do anything I’d want to do during that week, taking comfort in the fact that everything in my life that has to be done, is done. I don’t have to worry about things going off the rails while I explore new things, I know that they’re handled, and I can let go of my daily life and be totally involved in the new things I will discover.

I plan to be spontaneous. I plan to live my life without bounds. I plan to achieve everything I want in life, and still reserve plenty of time to do things I wasn’t able to plan for. Embrace the schedule, embrace the plan, be serious about it, and you’ll find that you can be more spontaneous than you’ve ever been.
